The Stalker

“A perfect day for the Salem Open Market,” I smiled at Lenny as we walked side by side amongst the vendors and booths. I had a cup of warm cider in one hand and a fragrant piece of fried dough in the other. “This is what autumn in New England is all about. Pumpkins, foliage, and amazing artisans in Salem.”

Lenny nodded his head at an artist’s booth with colorfully painted Day of the Dead skulls. “I might be able to use one or two of those for the bar.”

I took another bite of my fried dough. “My office décor is certainly coming along, but there’s always room to support our local artists. Maybe I should get a –”

A voice called out from the crowd. “Kathy!”

I turned, and Erin wriggled her way through us, her short stature nearly losing her amongst the tourists. I could barely see the top of her blonde head as she drew near us.

I smiled down at her. “It’s great to see you, Erin! How’s the music store doing?”

“Doing great, thanks.” She stepped forward to give Lenny a hug. “And it’s always good to see you. How’s the family?”

He nodded. “Doing well. We just had dinner with them last night.”

Erin raised her eyebrows, and her grin widened. “Wow. Already having dinner with the parents? So it’s serious?”

I blushed. “We’re just taking it one day at a time.”

She nudged Lenny in the ribs. “Kathy here is a good catch, Lenny. Not like someone else I could mention –”

He cut her off. “So, enjoying the spectacular weather? It seems like we’re getting one last hurrah at summer before we really delve into the cooler season.”

She looked around at the mobs of people surrounding us. “Oh, absolutely. Salem is crazy enough as it is during the Halloween month, but mix it in with gorgeous sunshine like this and you can’t walk across the street.”

She suddenly turned, looking back over her shoulder. Her brow creased.

I didn’t need cop instincts to see the tension in her neck. “Erin, is everything all right?”

“Yeah … well … I don’t know. I think someone’s been following me.”

Lenny gave a bemused look at the crowds which surrounded us on all sides. “Are you sure? Heck, half of Salem is out here, and the other half is probably on its way.”

“It’s not just today. It’s been a couple of days now. And yeah, I’m used to these crowds. Heck, we grew up with it. We know what to expect. But this is … different. I don’t know. You know how you sense when someone is staring at you?”

I glanced at Lenny, then nodded. “All right. How about Lenny and I shadow you for a little while? It’s a zoo, but maybe we’ll figure something out.”

Her face eased in relief. “Would you? Really? I’d appreciate it a ton.”

Lenny gave her a warm pat on the arm. “Of course we would. You just go on with your shopping and browsing. We’ll take different sides of the street and stay in touch on our phones.
